Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

  

What is it?


 

There ARE no exact numbers how many people suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) but it could be as many as 1 in 3 people, and it effects the individual to varying degrees.

November seems to be the onset month and SAD could last through until May.


Symptoms can include:

  • Disturbed sleep
  • lack of energy
  • irritability
  • overeating
  • depression
  • lack of libido
  • anxiety
  • social problems - you may feel you want to shut yourself away.

SAD can affect anyone at any age but most commonly 18-30 year olds and mostly women, as the Research shows from California University.


 

The disorder may have been caused due to a shock or bereavement (an emotional/traumatic event) or an illness. This disorder can not be cured but there are certainly things you do to help yourself. 

 

Good Foods/Drinks:

  • Protein
  • Fruit 
  • Vegetables  
  • Water - keep hydrated as this can affect energy and mood levels. 

 

Bad Foods/Drinks:

  • Sugar - this may disrupt energy levels. 
  • Alcohol - acts as a depressant.
