High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

What is it?

High Blood Pressure or Hypertension is known as the silent killer, for the simple reason may people will not recognise the symptoms.

There are numerous reasons why people may suffer from this condition, it could be caused by stress, a family history or due to your diet, or for some people age can cause high blood pressure.

If you have a reading of 140/90mmHG or higher you could be at risk which means you could be heading for a heart disease or a stroke.

Statistics show that as many as a fifth of the UK could suffer with high blood pressure: symptoms include headaches, sleepiness or dizziness, but many of us tend to make up excuses for feeling dizzy such as havn't slept much, skipped a meal, 'a bit stressed'.

  • Herbal teas - remove caffeine from your diet and replace with Hawthorn or Nettle tea, they may help with circulation and the nervous system. Also try chamomile if you get stressed.
  • Valerian - helps reduce stress.

If your blood pressure is down to stress you could always try out Transcendental Meditation it settles the mind to a natural state, it becomes restful yet still alert.

How to help yourself:

1. People who participate in physical activity are less likely to suffer as exercise causes the blood to be pumped around the body.
2. Reduce your alcohol intake and avoid binge drinking.
3. As difficult as it is remove stress from your life as it temporarily raises blood pressure.
4. Change your diet; if your diet consists of saturated fat it can actually cause a build up in the arteries and restrict the blood flow, which causes your heart to work harder.
5. Certain medications can cause high blood pressure so if you are concerned talk to your doctor.
6. Quit Smoking - this causes blood vessels to narrow which can cause a stoke or heart attack.
