Vitamin C
| What is it? |
Vitamin C, also known as Ascorbic Acid, is not naturally produced by the body so it is essential that we add it our diet as it has so many biological functions.
It is a water soluble vitamin, which means it needs to keep being replenished in the body.
It is also one of the most potent antioxidants essential for the body's health, in fact, it is used for over 300 functions in the body, rids toxins and protects the body from oxidative damage.

Unlike some animals, us humands do not have the ability to make their own Vitamin C so needs to be added to the diet. It is found in the following foods:
- Broccoli
- Brussels Sprouts
- Oranges
- Strawberries

The main function of vitamin C is to maintain collagen which is required for skin, ligaments, bones, teeth, vessel walls and helps iron to be absorbed. It is well knwon for its antioxidant properties so therefore which protects the cells from oxidative damage.

How much should I take and when?
The government RDA is between 40-60mg, but you can take it in amounts ranging between 300-2000mg. A lot of research has been carried out with Vitamin C which is ongoing. The amount really depends on your reason for taking in whether as a daily supplement for good health but for medicinal purposes higher amounts may be required.
Anything else I need to know?
Vitamin C is used up quickly in the body by alcohol, smoking, stress and some medication. It is also destroyed when food is being prepared for cooking and more so than other nutrients.
Although reaserch will continue in this field there has been reports that Vitamin C could help support the fight against cancer.
The body does not store Vitamin C and will get rid of excess amounts so it is important to replenish the body daily.
