What is it?
About two thirds or iodine is found in the thyroid gland (which is in the neck). It is used to make 2 thyroid hormones called tri-iodothyro and thyroxine and what these hormones do is regulate the metabolic rate. The body also uses iodine to maintain connective tissue for ligaments and tendons.
Where does it originate/where would it be found?
It is found in the following foods:
- Cod
- Haddock
- Herring
- Lobster
- Mackerel
- Milk
- Mussels
- Prawns
- Salmon
- Trout
What would I take it for?
If you find that you are losing a lot of weight or the opposite gaining too much weight and you may have a thyroid problem so the first thing to do would speak to you doctor as it can help weight problems.
There may be some symptoms that may also be caused through lack of iodine:
- Tiredness
- Muscle weakness
- Poor concentration
- Cold hands and feet
How can it help my training?
If it is iodine you are lacking you would generally feel better once you talk to the doctor and get prescribed the right things. This will in turn help your overall health and you should find yourself training at a better level and feel more alert; less sluggish during training.
Where can I buy it?
It is mainly found in Multivitamins in very small amounts.

How much should I take and when?
You need to be cautious with iodine because if you suffer with thyroid problems you need to make sure you talk to a health professional to discuss any amounts you need.
Anything else I need to know?
High levels of iodine could result in swelling of the gland and in the long run this could cause turn cancerous.
