Research carried out at Exter University asked eight men between the age of 19 and 38 to drink 500ml of beetroot juice for six days before a series of bike tests. On a sepearte occassion they were also asked to drink a placebo (black currant cordial) of the same amount. The studies showed men were ablt to extend their cycling time by just over 11 minutes. Plus blood pressure had also lowered.
It is thought that the juice contains high levels of nitrate which turns into nitric oxide in the body; less oxygen is needed by the muscles so they are able to work harder for longer.
