Don't Forget Your Core - 13th Feb 2011

My reason for this rather brief write up is due to the amount of people I see in the gym doing the same exercise/weight lifting regime over and over again: spending far too long on the same body parts and missing fundamental basics.

Core Training is a must. Your core muscle development is central to successful body building. It is the building block and foundation for peak performance in many sports. A simple exercise such as crunches builds core muscle strength.

Exercising the core muscles regularly strengthens your stability, improves balance, posture, overall strength, it also boosts performance, productivity and wellbeing. This basic tool allows you to reach your full potential. It can even lengthen the quality and duration of your life and reduce long term health problems.

There are an array of exercises that you can be doing, and altering your gym regime to add a few minutes of core training can make a huge difference to your physique.

If you have never trained your core before it is surprising, what may look like an easy exercise can actually be very exhausting. Once you get into the swing of it you'll wonder why you never tried it before.

One of the most simple exercises and one which I find effective and use it when on the road is The Pillar Bridge Front (Core Performance pg 68); lying face down in a press up position with your forearms on the floor, elbows need to be under your shoulders at a 90 degree angle. You hold your body in this position, this is an exercise you can progress with.
