How To Get More Brain Power - 14th Oct 2008

If you are looking for a boost in brain power to help you get through those long meetings and be the whizz kid in the office, just a few tweaks in your diet could be all you need.

Research shows that those who eat breakfast, throughout the day would be able to solve problems twice as fast.

Breakfast is classed as the most important meal of the day, but what you actually eat has a massive impact on how we perform for the day.Gingko

Too much sugar, from those lovely sugary pops, can give you a high for a short time but  energy levels will drop too early in the day, you will not sustain the energy and the downfall will lead to tiredness or feelings of lethargy.

Ideally, you should be eating something that will give a constant release of energy so a mixture of carbs and protein will help your energy levels and help you achieve both mentally and physically. So that ritual of sugary cereals you just have to eat before heading to work could be replaced with porridge or even a potato or rice with an egg.

Nicola Graimes author of ‘'Brain Foods for Kids'’ highlighted that the brain is made of 60% fat which has to come from the diet. Oily fish is a great source which can be included into the diet or as a supplement.

Another simple factor to help your brain power which a lot of people don'’t consider is dehydration which can actually lead to lack of concentration. Think about your day how often do you talk, what physical activities are you involved in, how many things do you consume which also dehydrates the body e.g. Coffee, Salt? You may need a higher intake of water.

Also another reason to get fit is that exercise can actually improve the oxygen supply to the brain, even other activities such as puzzles, board games, card games they all help to keep the brain active and aide your concentration.

Summary: swap the cereal for porridge and start playing scrabble.
